With new Manager of the Super Eagles, George Finidi, expected to formally assume duties after his formal unveiling today in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, feelers have emerged that eggheads of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) led by its President, Ibrahim Gusau and the new coach are yet to reach a compromise on the best candidates to work alongside Finidi as assistant coaches.
While the new Manager is alleged to prefer another former international, Daniel Amokachi and the United States’ Under-19 coach, Micheal Essien as his assistants, the NFF is yet to give its nod to have these men on board the senior national team’s technical crew.
A source said what is delaying the announcement of the assistant coaches and other members of the technical crew, including a match reader, psychologist and physiotherapist, may not be unconnected to disagreement on the mode of payment of emoluments. Due to paucity of funds, the NFF has reportedly proposed to reward Finidi’s assistants on a pay-per-match basis, a suggestion Essien allegedly turned down. Amokachi’s position to the proposal is still unclear.
It remains to be seen if this issue would be resolved before Finidi is officially unveiled at the national secretariat of the NFF in Abuja later today.
