The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting consumers and boosting economic growth through standardisation in the Iron and Steel industry.

In response to criticism from the Iron Rod and Steel Distributors Employers Union of Nigeria (IRSDEUN) regarding the alleged inefficiency of SON in preventing the circulation of substandard products, the organisation has clarified that it has been proactive in ensuring that only products meeting quality standards are allowed in the Nigerian market.

Contrary to the claims made by IRSDEUN, SON has conducted investigations and implemented stringent monitoring mechanisms to combat the proliferation of substandard iron rods and steel products. The organisation firmly rejects the notion that it has been lax in its regulatory duties.

It has been revealed that distributors themselves have played a role in the dissemination of substandard products by pressuring manufacturers to produce inferior goods for their own benefit.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed by STEELMAN, an association of Steel Manufacturing companies, in collaboration with SON, highlights the commitment to quality assurance in the industry.

The MoU outlines guidelines for member companies to follow, including the appointment of compliance overseers and provision of accommodation for association representatives within company premises for effective monitoring.

These measures demonstrate a collaborative effort between regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders to uphold quality standards.

In light of these developments, SON refutes the allegations made by IRSDEUN and urges stakeholders to refrain from spreading misinformation that undermines efforts towards quality assurance in the iron and steel industry.

The organisation remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding consumer interests and promoting economic development.

Foluso Bolaji, Director of Public Relations at SON, calls for constructive engagement and cooperation from all stakeholders to effectively address challenges in the industry.
